  Anybody attend their Senior Prom as a JW? Wha' happen?

  this will be raising it's ugly head in the next few years with my kids unless we're out by then.

  so, did anyone attend their senior prom while still a jw?

  I can't remember how this was arranged but 4 of us girls went with 4 young brothers. None of us was going with any of the brothers--just a group thing. I can't believe that some of the witness kid's parents let them go. Some of the kids' dad's were elders.

  It was so boring. Even though I got along fine with my classmates, I never went to the dances. The 8 of us sat at a table together and didn't interact with anyone. It wasn't fun. When I think of all the grapes I tied to buy my dress and get my hair done.... Luckily, I don't have any pictures.

  The pink one is the one I remember. Of course, I left in the mid 70's. Does anyone remember that one about Lazarus that sounded like a dirge. Talk about depressing.

  Lazarus lay sleeeeping in a cold stone grave, How his sisters mourned him, non there him could save.....

  What always cracked me up was how they had to use really strange words or word order to rhyme.

  me, i'm in probably one of the most hated careers in america right now.

  (not gonna tell you what it is either) but how about you, what do you do to earn a little coin?.

  Penny pinching hints and tips

  ok, the lemonade thread has prompted me to ask does anyone else have any clever and legal ways to pinch pennies, like the guy did with the lemonade?.

  Whenever someone at work gives away extra garden produce, I'm happy to accept. Some hunters around here give away venison because their family doesn't like it. I do.

  When my son was little, money was really tight (single mom in college). We'd go to a movie matinee and I'd bring popcorn and a small bottle of water or soda in a large pocketbook (in a plastic bag of course). These days renting movies might be cheaper but I still like going to a movie theater. I cannot bring myself to pay $12 for a small popcorn and soda--bad for you anyway. I no longer bring my own popcorn but have lunch before the movie--ok I admit sometimes I bring a candy bar.

  When I'm buying a large item, sometimes I ask for a cash discount. They lose a percent if I use a credit card. It doesn't hurt to ask and I'm amazed at the times they'll give 2-10%. Even when someone says "no" they've never been rude. If I use my credit card, I pay it off at the end of the month.

  Since I'm into crafts, I make some greeting cards and gifts.

  Last, but not least, I clip coupons. Love those doubled or tripled.

  I'm not a cheapskate but pretty frugal. Charging $1.69-$1.99 for a fountain drink seems really out of line when the cost per glass isn't that expensive. They say you can get free refills, but it adds a big cost to a $3-$4 sandwich. But if I want one, I get it. If money's a little tight, I don't.

  I can see the restaurant's side. Some people take all the jelly packets and sugar packets and napkins. I'm surprised they don't take the ketchup bottle. There's a convenience store in town that has the hot dog buns ready in foil wrappers. Some of town's youngsters were eating the rolls right in the store and telling each other they were free. Dumb.

  My sister worked in a restaurant and had a middle-aged couple come in for supper regularly. He would order one special for them to split and ask for it on separate plates. Then he would complain about the size of the portion(s) and ask for lots of extra rolls and butter. Two dinners for the price of one! It's hard to know whether people are just cheap or really need to save money. But I think I'd stay home and eat peanut butter and jelly.

  cheesy movies

  i am watching "independence day" which is one of my favorite movies - i watch it every time it comes on television.

  i also really like "beetlejuice," "the american president," and several others that i admit are cheesy but a great deal of fun.

  "men in black" is great too.. what are your favorite cheesy movies?

  So my college gives me an advanced class when it should be beginners!!!

  i'm about to pull my hair out with it.

  i'm frustrated because i'm working my arse off with this class and still maybe will pass with a d. i've called the counselors, teachers and other students.

  axia (my college branch from phoenix) will be changing it but not until after we complete this course.

  I know the feeling. I took a lot of Algebra at a Community College and at the university they put me into a required course that was business use of calculus. I never had calculus, pre-calculus or anything beyond algebra. I didn't understand a word the professor (grad student) was saying. It was like he was talking a foreign language. That course was dropped for a basic calculus course which I somehow passed.

  When I took that business calculus course again, it wasn't much better. Got a B on a really crappy midterm--must have been graded on a huge curve. Only other test was a take-home final. A bunch of us worked on it together and no one could figure it out--even the kids who had taken a lot of calculus. My friend and I got the same B on the midterm and turned in the same exact final, but I got an A in the course and she got a C. Made no sense whatsoever. It was the only college course I've ever had that was a complete waste of time and money.

  As a JW were you ever counseled about clothes you wore, or lack thereof ?

  thought this could get interesting discussing experiences.

  i for one was trying to reach out for ministerial servant again in the early 90's , had been one before, and was assigned to carry the microphones one meeting.

  had an elder call me in the back room and say , " brother flipper, i noticed looking down towards your shoes that you are wearing white socks today.

  Finally-Free

  #2 through #6 sound like a great outfit to me. Just leave off the tie though.

  I don't know if this was really counsel but one of the elders wives didn't like how my skirt was hemmed--the stitches were too big and showed too much. I kid you not! She offered to show me how to hem a skirt properly.

  The witlesses just make everyone so petty. In the real world how many people would dare to critique someone's appearance under the guise of "loving counsel"? They took that bit about not stumbling someone to a ridiculous degree. So, if one person didn't like the color purple, I'm never supposed to wear purple again so they aren't stumbled? Get over it.

  Colin Firth fan here, too. Loved him in Love, Actually.

  I've watched Guarding Tess with Nicholas Cage and Shirley MacLaine so many time but it still gets me every time. Especially the part where he won't let them bring her out of where she was held captive without washing her up first. Where's the Kleenex?
